TrollBusters provides support for women journalists and writers that are targets of online harassment. The TrollBusters' team provides tools and services - such as personal endorsements; just-in-time coaching and reputation repair services - to support victims of online abuse or other troll behavior.

It was founded in New York City on January 30, 2015 by Michelle Ferrier, Associate Professor at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism of the Ohio University and former journalist, who was herself a victim of harassment while working as a columnist for the Daytona Beach News-Journal in Florida.

The Public Media Alliance (PMA) is the largest global association of public service broadcasters. It was first founded in 1945 as the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association. The PMA provides a global context for public service broadcasters as they transit in the digital era. It has members (operating through TV, radio and online) in 54 countries.

The about section of the association's site reads that the PMA works "to identify, research and champion common themes in Public service media (PSM) and provide forums for debate and networking. We also act as a bridge between the academic and public debate around PSM and its changing role. Media In Action - Stakeholders

Media in Action is a EU funded project that aims to train educators (i.e. youth and community group leaders, techers, trainee teachers or teaching assistants) in media literacy and storytelling. Expected results include:

  • an online course for educators in media literacy and storytelling;
  • teaching and learning materials;
  • a repository of lesson plans and resources;
  • an online community;
  • a showcase of stories from end users.

The project is led by a European consortium composed by Pontydysgu (UK, Germany, Spain), COFAC (Portugal), Cooperativa Nuova Dimensione (Italy), Grupo Comunicar (Spain) and KIC (Malta).

Media Literacy Institute - Stakeholders

MEDIA LITERACY INSTITUTE (MLI) is a non-profit organization founded in 2017 in Greece. Its aim is to promote and disseminate the concepts of Media and Information Literacy in Greece, Europe and internationally. Media and Information Literacy aims at the critical perception, use and creation of knowledge and information οn any traditional or modern communication medium, and requires the acquisition of cognitive, functional, technical and communication skills, as well as the capabilities of using modern means of communication. The mission of the Institute is to inform the Greek public about the conceptual, theoretical, regulatory and practical framework in which MIL concepts are developed. Its goal is to mobilize citizens and to provide them with opportunities to access the relevant information, skills, tools and means and to engage in appropriate activities to become media literate.

MLI supports the idea that democracy requires well-informed citizens and that Media and News Literacy are among the most important ways to combat bias and hate speech online, to promote the fundamental right of citizens to be self-aware when they interact with the media, to learn how to cross check resources, to develop skills of inquiry when investigating the resources, creators and purposes of any content, so that readers can distinguish reliable information from “fake news”, personal opinions, prejudices or propaganda.

MEDIA LITERACY INSTITUTE focuses on printed and online content such as social media, mass media, all kinds of public and frequently used communication platforms, as well as various online and offline sources. In this context, MLI emphasizes that modern active citizens of all ages need to develop the habits of curiosity,  research and creative questioning along with suitable expression skills, to cultivate the necessary critical thinking in getting information from any source, and to acquire the knowledge on how to create and use multimedia messages.

Global Council To Build Trust in Media and Fight Misinformation - Stakeholders

The Global Council To Build Trust in Media and Fight Misinformation (GC2FM) is a global initiative aiming at facilitating and actioning realistic, practical and workable solutions to the problem of misinformation. The Council will unite and focus on this issue through four key areas based on the core needs identified during the framing process: first, the creation of a repository of resources and initiatives in the fight of misinformation: second, the creation of a network of individuals, organisations and initiatives; third, foster innovation in order to identify workable solutions; forth, stimulate the industry to speak with a unified voice.

The framing committee of the Global Council is composed by: the Ethical Journalism Network, the European Broadcasting Union, the Global Editors Network, the Global Forum for Media Development, the Online News Association, and WAN-IFRA/World Editor’s Forum.

The Council was launched in April 2018.

Plataforma en Defensa de la Libertad de Información (PDLI) is a Spanish civil society group uniting journalists, lawyers, media houses, social movements and consumer advocates.

PDLI arouse out of the concern of a group of organisations and individuals in the legal field, journalism and social movements after the deterioration of freedom of expression and information in Spain, following a series of reforms and the approval of new laws, such as the Organic Law Project on the Protection of Citizen Security, the Intellectual Property Law, the Transparency Law.

Among the activities PDLI carries out, there is the monitoring and dissemination of attacks on freedom of expression against journalists and the media, as well as against activists, social movements and citizens. PDLI also support campaign in defense of media freedom and organise training programs for journalists, activists and social movements on how to safely exercise their profession.

PDLI launched mapea.cc, an online tool to collect data on legal threats to freedom of expression.

EAVI - European Association for Viewers Interests - Stakeholders

EAVI – the European Association for Viewers Interests – is an  international non-profit organisation registered in Brussels which advocates media literacy and full citizenship. EAVI supports the adoption of initiatives that enable citizens read, write and participate in public life through the media. It thus works towards the goal of a healthy, democratic and cohesive society.

EAVI has been created to facilitate the unifying process of all those who support citizens’ and consumers' interests in the field of media. It has been formally established with the support of the European Commission and received a Royal decree from the Belgian authorities in March 2005.

EAVI represents citizens interests in the European sphere through lobbying, conferences, networking, research, media literacy focused projects, the development of good practices and the production of online content of resources with a particular attention to the education of young people.
